Description: Another Diplomatic Mess 1862 This is a partial page only, which is over 160 years old. It was clipped from the Nov. 29, 1862 issue of Harper's Weekly, Americas leading illustrated paper during the Civil War. The cartoon measures 4.5 x 5 inches on the larger partial page which is 8.5 x 10.5 inches in size, and is in excellent condition, with a modest bit of browning from age. What makes the sheet interesting is the political cartoon it presents, making fun of a Chinese immigrant who is objecting to possibly being drafted during the Civil War. It portrays him as a caricature speaking in very broken English, saying that he'll take up the issue with his own government. Below the heading of ANOTHER DIPLOMATIC MESS, the caption identifies him as JOHN CHINAMAN, saying: Me Merikan Man you no draftee me you Draftee me, me appeal to my Government. My Government be Much Mad! It was drawn by Frank Bellew (1828-1888), a famous illustrator who signed his work with his initials, "FB", contained within a triangle. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
