About these stamps: This beautiful 1977 se-tenant (4 stamps) issued by the USPS depicts a different butterfly from a different US geographic area in each pane. Each one's genus name as well as the common name is displayed on the stamp -the swallowtail from the Pacific Northwest, the checkerspot from New England to the Ozarks, the dogface from California and the Southwest, and the orange-tip from the Northeast to the Southern Plains. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Number 1715a.
