After less than stellar performances at catcher and first base in his initial seasons, Murphy shot to stardom as the Braves' centerfielder. Playing for weak Atlanta teams which made the playoffs only once during his tenure, Murphy nevertheless became (1982-1983) the youngest of the four players in NL history to win back-to-back MVP awards. The 7-time All-Star won five straight Gold Glove awards and joined the elite 30-homer, 30-stolen-bases club in 1983. He is one of only three players (along with Roger Maris and Juan Gonzalez) to win multiple MVP awards without entering the Hall of Fame) A devout Mormon, Murphy was in demand for commercial endorsements of family-friendly products, and supports many charity events.
