Description: Italeria 1/48 Lockheed US Navy S-3A/B Viking with aftermarket extras to build this kit to resemble VS-30's 2004 Operation Iraqi Freedom Cruise aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). By the turn of the century, the S-3B Viking's primary role in the carrier airwing was to provide carrier-based in-flight refueling support and the aftermarket accessories in this bundled auction allow you to build the Viking for this role. My intent was to build this kit in that tanker role as it became such an important part of the carrier air wing by the turn of the Century. Too often, I see S-3 Viking builds with AGM-84 Harpoons strapped to the pylons, a payload it rarely carried. It was an ASW platform at its core, and by the time Lockheed resolved many of the early issues the A-model had, it became an intrical part of the carrier air wing. Later, it saw action in Desert Storm carrying AGM-65 Mavericks striking surface targets in the Persian Gulf. Eventually it became the KA-6D Intruder's successor as a carrier based tanker.
