microace a9714, JNR class 9600 japanese steam locomotive, n scale, USA ship

Description: the JNR class 9600 steam locomotive was produced primarily by kawasaki heavy industries from 1913 thru the late 1920s; the "kunroku" - old man mountain - as it was nicknamed was the first japanese mass produced locomotive....828 locomotives were produced and used exclusively in freight service, having a top operating speed of 65 kph. a few 9600s continued to be utilized in special circumstances into the 1960s.......most were supplanted with the arrival of the ubiquitous d51 in the 1930s..... i acquired this jnr class 9600 from an online reseller in japan who usually sells compromised inventory, frequently without factory issued packaging............this a9714 was no exception to his normal marketing approach arriving with no jewel box and several unsatisfactory conditions which required rectification.......foremost, the model had no coupler on the tender side and the original coupler's removal had been accomplished by forced entry into the designed coupler containment area.....i utilized my repair bin to interchange the tender base for the a9714 - which includes the designed coupler containment - and my spare parts stock yielded a kato z01-0041 coupler and tomix jc05 coupler spring, which are the perfect replacements for the appropriate microace parts, as microace offers no distribution of spare parts.....additionally, one of the combination levers had become freed from its control slot requiring reinsertion...................i then proceeded with the test run which exhibited 30% on the rheostat for n scale factored running speed, smooth and consistent operation, and a functional head lamp although the dull orange of pre chip led technology (model's original release date 2004)......... the only accessory for the a9714 is a rapido coupler for the front end, whose installation protocol must be intuited as microace's rudimentary sketch was not included........... the a9714 will ship to the new owner in a small kato freight car jewel case using paper towel as the cushioning mechanism......this ad hoc arrangement was selected after several other combinations of packaging materials were tried and rejected.... this iconic microace model is usually only available - when presented in its factory issued packaging and free of defects - at prices which would preclude my acquisition and listing at any reasonable price point.......
