Description: This still life was painted by Todd Tibbals. As he is known for his watercolors. I think this is an early work. He was born in 1939 in Columbus, Ohio, and studied at Miami University in Ohio, the Indiana University, and the Corcoran School of Art. He is known for his watercolors and I understands that he believes that watercolors must sometimes lack resolution and be ambiguous to tease the viewers, to make them come back to the painting. This would also be true for this oil as well (once you see the flag you will look for more). He has combined six years of Peace Corp work in Peru and Ecuador, an MA in Latin American Studies and formal training at the Corcoran School of Art. Todd Tibbals has painted and taught in Albuquerque New Mexico (where this oil was 'discovered') for over three decades. We are told that "New Mexico represents a glorious cultural halfway house between his Midwestern roots and his Latin American experience. His four years of Peace Corps work in Peru and Ecuador, a Masters Degree in Latin American history, and his formal training as the Corcoran School of Art was instrumental in his emergence as a preeminent visual interpreter of the Latin American and southwestern realities." His honors/awards in shows include the NM State Fair;Museum of NM (Santa Fe); NM, National, & Western Federation of Watercolor Societies; Museum of Tucson; Nat’l Small Painting Show (Abq.); Biennial (Santa Fe); El Paso Museum; MasterWorks (Water media & Miniatures), serving as Judge of the Miniatures Division in2006. He has been featured in many one-person shows (NM, Ohio, Mexico, Italy); and in media, including New Mexico Magazine (’93), American Artist (’80), and "Colores" TV5 (’90). In 2009 when Tibbals received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Rio Grand Art Association they in part said that "His honors/awards in shows include the NM State Fair; Museum of NM (Santa Fe); NM, National, & Western Federation of Watercolor Societies; Museum of Tucson; Nat’l Small Painting Show (Abq.); Biennial (Santa Fe); El Paso Museum; MasterWorks (Water media & Miniatures), serving as Judge of the Miniatures Division in 2006. He has been featured in many one-person shows (NM, Ohio, Mexico, Italy); and in media, including New Mexico Magazine (’93), American Artist (’80), and "Colores" TV5 (’90)." In 2009 he also won the Western Federation of Watercolor Society Jean Winters Cash Award And I just noticed that in 2013 in the Masterworks of New Mexico 15th annual Exhibit he won the Carol Bryant Memorial Award for a watermedia and took an honorable mention with another. This painting is in oil and may be an early work. He titled it "Group". The original cost was removed from the price tag that has his signature. I think this occurred when the owner made a charitable donation because a goodwill tag also appears. I left my auction tag on it (that time I was #32) under the goodwill tag. The winner can add the ebay sales info to keep the trail alive. In addition to all this what appears to be a Social Security number was carved into the frame and the #8 in a circle and artists name are printed on the lower left corner dust cover. It is signed in the art and on the paper ticket - see photos. It is an oil on canvas that measures about 24" X 32" in a frame about 24.5" X 32.5". I think Tibbals framed this in his studio and the frame is original to the painting. It has been used/ hung but is in good condition. The dust cover has tares that I taped. Otherwise as found. I think this will prove to be of historical importance in a collection of New Mexico art and or works by this already famous artist. My shipping costs include insurance. Thanks for looking.
