The map was published by Johnson & Ward, New York and is titled: "Johnson's Maine." The image area measures 40 x 32 cm [15¾" x 12½"], and there is a distance scale in the lower corner. There is wonderful detail throughout, including a network of roads, identified as "common roads" in the legend key, used by stagecoaches and wagons, as well as travelers on foot and horseback. The map labels Indian townships and shows lands granted to various schools and institutions. It also delineates the state's northwest boundary, as settled by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842.
