Description: Wonderful Truly Vintage, Near Antique Santa Claus 'Saint Nick' Head Jar or Planter - Rare Brown Eyes! Titled & Signed by Jane - Holland, California Circa Late 1940's Post World War II - Very Rare Mold - 6" Tall An enduring and charming interpretation of Saint Nick with brown eyes! Hand painted fired ceramic jar with a very shiny clear glaze layer over the paint. Considering the age this 6" tall jar is in wonderful condition, and he displays beautifully! This particular mold appears to be quite rare as I've collected Santa Claus figures for 50 years, and a good many ceramic Santa cookie jars and Christmas planters, and I have never seen another. I've owned this myself for about 40 years, and I purchased it from an elderly neighbor lady that said she received him as a Christmas gift in the later 1940's after the War filled with home-made fudge. I've wondered if the original mold may have been a 2-part mold that included a hat as a lid like a cookie jar would have, but there was never one with it. I was told the way it is now is the way it was received (minus the candy). Perhaps it was made to be a ceramic planter..... we'll never know without finding another for comparison. Note the signature on the bottom by 'Jane .... Holland, Calif.'. She titled the piece 'Saint Nick' so we do know it to be considered a version of Santa Claus. He has a fur looking collar on, as well. I do not know of a town called Holland in California but believe it to be more of an area in that State. This may be indicative of the age of the piece and the terminology used at the time for those that lived there, and not necessarily a named town or city. Condition: Again, considering the age I believe him to be in very good condition. The surface layer of this ceramic is a very thick, very shiny clear glaze, and I do note there are a few surface flakes of it that have popped off over the years. The most notable one I see is circled and shown in the last photo. There is also some glaze crazing, but the crazing is not really notable on the jar sides as much as it is on the bottom. Occasional surface rubs of high points, small age spots, etc., but the guy has been around for a good 70 or so years, so all these age-related issues are to be expected. There are no cracks, chips, hairlines, or old repairs. He looks the same as he did when I bought him years ago. See the photos in zoom for your best study. I don't have room to display all the vintage and antique Christmas items I've collected over the last 50 years, so I'm downsizing pieces I come across in storage that I haven't had the room to show for the last few years. Some of them haven't see the light of day for quite a few years now and I've even forgotten about them. That means I have too much! I came across this piece recently as I was going through a big box. I hope you consider adding this wonderful old piece to your Christmas decor...... he's a charmer, and he will make a wonderful addition to your vintage Santa or Christmas ceramics collection however you choose to display him! Shipping: Double boxed and packed with great care. USPS with tracking. Thanks for Looking!
