Basically, I ask myself if I would purchase my item as a buyer looking at the item price + shipping combined and if the answer is "no", I lower the cost of the item because I have no control over shipping prices, that falls on USPS and the zone you live in. C - I ship all my items out the way I would want to receive them and I'm particular, so if I feel the item will be damaged in route - they will be boxed, padded and/or wrapped.
