The artist explains the process of making batik art on a piece of paper attached to the back of this piece: "Materials: fabric: 100% natural fiber melted paraffin & beeswax paint brushes or tjanting toolcold water dye Starting with white fabric, you brush on the melted wax in the areas you wish tokeep white. It is then dipped in a dye (e.g. yellow) and allowed to dry. The exposed areas turn yellow while the waxesareas resist the dye. Next, re-wax the areasto remain yellow. Re-dye, perhaps ina blue dye. All the exposed areas now turn green, as blue and yellow make green.Continued until all areas are waxed. Ironbetween sheets of newspaper to remove wax.(Newspapers must be 6 months old or print may come off on fabric.) The crackle effect occurs when the dyes seep in thecracks in the wax."
